Boating At Dragon Bay

Mar 1, 2010

Dragon Bay is all about life on the water. And Cayman’s waters are a source of endless fun and adventure for the community’s residents and guests. Be it a languid sunset cruise, a glass-bottom boat and snorkeling adventure, or a full-day private fishing charter – Dragon Bay owners have their pick of sublime aquatic activities. And with the range of boating services offered at Dragon Bay, maximizing the enjoyment of being near the water is easy.

One of the most popular excursions is to Cayman’s world-famous Stingray City – where owners return time and time again to marvel at the natural wonder of the colony of tame stingrays, and dive in to feed, swim and play with these magnificent creatures. From there, it’s a short ride to a vibrant coral reef teeming with colorful tropical fish.

At The DeckHouses, boating is a way of life for many owners. This community is designed for ease of access by water, and each private estate home has its own integrated boathouse. With the choice of using their own boats, the legendary AquaRiva available to all DeckHouse owners, or any of the captained fleet of Intrepid speedboats at Dragon Bay’s BlueTip Watersports – residents have no excuse not to be out on the water. They can take a boat directly from their very own boathouse, or catch a ride at the Periwinkle dock at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman – complete with fortifying catering and refreshing beverages to enjoy the ride.

Fishing at Dragon Bay

Another favorite is a deep sea fishing charter with the BlueTip Watersports team. Cayman’s waters are home to schools of many species of sought-after game fish, and anglers can fish year-round for Blue Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Mahi-Mahi, Barracuda and many more. For a truly memorable angling experience, Dragon Bay’s avid fishermen (and women) take BlueTip’s Flats Fishing charter. This private one-of-a-kind trip is tailored for two people, and cruises through the shallow clear waters near the shore in search of elusive bonefish. Or, anglers can hunt for Tarpon in the mangroves. The experience is comfortable and thrilling aboard the 21-foot Flats Boat, which is designed to maneuver through water that is just 18 inches deep. BlueTip’s captains take the boat to where the fish are biting.

It’s no surprise that fishing is very popular in Cayman, and whether you’re an expert or a novice, there is a year-round array of tournaments to bring out your competitive streak.

Dragon Bay Annual Fishing Tournament

The 1st Annual Dragon Bay Fishing Tournament – exclusively for Dragon Bay homeowners – will be inaugurated this Easter weekend.

Starting on April 1st with a Captain’s Cocktails & Registration Party, the fun will continue with a full day of fishing on Friday, April 2nd followed by a weigh-in and prize-giving ceremony at the Periwinkle dock. Winners will receive the inaugural Dragon Bay Fishing Tournament trophy – and the thrill of having their prize catch cooked in their own Dragon Bay residence by one of the top chefs at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

If fishing doesn’t appeal – there are lots of other water-based options at Dragon Bay too.

When in the mood to relax, what’s better than a Cayman sunset cruise? Beginning their trip through the winding waterways of The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman resort, Dragon Bay owners and guests are soon out in the North Sound – feeling the wind in their hair as they whisk across the Sound to the Island’s tranquil North Side and enjoy Champagne and canapés along the way. There’s no agenda for this excursion other than to take in the Cayman sunset, visit North Side’s peaceful lagoons, and relax on the waters of the North Sound - Cayman’s most popular boating playground.

Mangrove Exporation with Ambassadors of the Environment

To get even closer to nature, and in particular Cayman’s marine environment, Dragon Bay also offers the Ambassadors of the Environment program at The Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman. Owners and guests can hop into one of the Ambassadors’ kayaks and explore Cayman’s mysterious mangroves - a jungle gym of trees that bridge land and sea, providing a habitat for an amazing variety of animal, plant and sea life.

In fact, Dragon Bay can be all about boating and the water from the moment you arrive. BlueTip offers an executive boat transfer for arrival to and departure from Dragon Bay by boat. After boarding one of the 36-foot Intrepids, an exhilarating ride across the North Sound begins - with the sea breeze blowing and a cold refreshment in hand, you know you have arrived.

Life on the water at Dragon Bay – there’s no better way to spend your days.

Footprints In History: Traditional Architecture

Cayman’s first settlers in the 1700s brought their own home-building traditions with them. The English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish had memories of timber-framed, brick or stone houses; and the African slaves’ knowledge was of mud-walled homes with grass roofs. These diverse traditions combined to develop a uniquely Caymanian building style.
