Stuart Wilson
Mar 1, 2010
A truly home-grown Caymanian artist, Stuart Wilson most recently showcased his roots, rock, reggae musical style for the Haiti Relief Concert at the Brick House – which raised over $16,000 in donations to assist our Caribbean neighbor.
Born and raised in the Cayman Islands, Stuart’s ancestry is rooted in Jamaica - the birthplace of reggae music. He says he has sung and played his guitar for, “as long as he can remember” and he boasts a sound that is unique, yet somehow familiar. Currently working on finishing an album in England, Stuart says he wants to “give the world an album they can feel and tunes they can sing forever.” The album will consist of 12 new tracks and will be released in Europe prior to its Caribbean debut.
Stuart’s music is a flavorful style of reggae that appeals to a cross-section of cultures, perhaps influenced by his growing up in the multi-cultural mélange that is the Cayman Islands. His songs incorporate the overtones of many of his influences; Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Maxi Priest, Third World, Aswad, Big Mountain and many other popular artists from all genres of music.
Stuart is a gifted guitarist, singer and songwriter whose work shows lyrical depth and thought. He feels his experiences as a writer and journalist, and his completion of a bachelor’s degree in communication arts and broadcast from St. Thomas University in Miami were paramount to his professional and personal development. His ‘day job’ is as a photojournalist with The Caymanian Compass.
“I am a journalist and writer and this affinity for language affects the music I create to a large degree,” he said.
Stuart worked as a television news reporter in the Cayman Islands for over two years before relocating to England to study music management and publishing in 2005. His original song “Represent” was recorded in England with chart topping producers, The Next Room Studios, who met Stuart while he was singing and playing his guitar in the subways of downtown London. Since returning to Cayman in late 2007, Stuart has been preparing to take on the international reggae market and the world through his company Love Culture Entertainment.
Determined to fulfill his commitment to his art and his belief that the Lord has put a musical calling on his life, he says his greatest wish is to tour the world and contribute to the musical fraternity, as well as the art.
Stuart is best known for his many performances in the Cayman Islands, Jamaica, and Great Britain with his band, Love Culture. The artist and his band have also opened for acts such as Damian Marley, Richie Spice, Morgan Heritage, Maxi Priest, Beres Hammond and a host of others.
Stuart Wilson and Love Culture were a featured act at the 2008 Cayman Islands Jazz Fest, following on from their role opening the inaugural Jazz Fest back in 2004. When it comes to his future, Stuart believes in hard work and perseverance and says that he has faith that love and music will take him where he needs to go. For now, Stuart continues to perfect his sound and prepare for the challenges involved in seeking international success.
“With this new album, we are determined to try to set a standard that will speak for itself,” Stuart said.
