Cayman Islands – Culinary Capital of the Caribbean

Cayman, with its extensive selection of restaurants and cuisines, is widely acknowledged as the culinary capital of the Caribbean. With so many restaurants to choose from, including several international award-winning options, visiting and resident epicureans are never without an option for a sumptuous meal. Each month, Voyages will feature one of Cayman’s outstanding restaurants that we heartily recommend.

Ragazzi Restaurant

Ragazzi Restaurant is owned and run by good friends Paolo Polloni and Andi Marcher – ‘ragazzi’ means ‘good buddies’ in Italian. With its vibrant colors, authentic aromatic wood burning pizza oven and central location, Ragazzi has become a focal point for family, friends and repeat customers to get together many times over. Located in Buckingham Square on West Bay Road, Ragazzi has been a favorite of both Cayman residents and visitors since opening its doors in 1999.

Although known for its authentic Italian brick oven pizza, Ragazzi is also renowned for their excellent Italian cuisine. A few of the customers favorites are the light Beef Carpaccio – wafer thin sliced beef, fired capers, fresh arugula and mustard horseradish dressing; the tantalizing Shellfish Linguine with lobster, shrimp, scallops, mussels , olive oil, diced tomato, garlic and basil; the hearty Grilled Beef Tenderloin - a bacon wrapped 8oz filet mignon with fresh thyme and cabernet sauce, mixed vegetables and daily potatoes; and the mouthwatering California Pizza with grilled chicken breast, artichokes, spinach, roasted garlic and smoked provolone cheese.

The extensive wine list, which has won the Wine Spectator Award for Excellence for the last seven years, offers the perfect pairing to complement any meal well within your budget.

Customers are invited to come in and enjoy the welcoming atmosphere at the bar –whether for an appetizer or a late night snack. Ragazzi’s warm ambience and efficient service can be enjoyed seven days a week from 11:30am to 11pm.

CUSTOMER REVIEW: ‘Great pizza, great Italian food…this place is amazing. The food is always freshly prepared and always made to perfection. The service and people are great, wine list is extensive and desserts are fantastic. Always worth 2-3 dinners when visiting the island for a week or 10 day trip.’

Footprints In History: Traditional Architecture

Cayman’s first settlers in the 1700s brought their own home-building traditions with them. The English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish had memories of timber-framed, brick or stone houses; and the African slaves’ knowledge was of mud-walled homes with grass roofs. These diverse traditions combined to develop a uniquely Caymanian building style.
